One hundred teachers from across Bangladesh will be recognised with the national Distinguished Teacher Honour on World Teachers' Day, 5 October. The Prime Minister is set to hand over the awards at the main ceremony.

Until now only 12 teachers received the honour each year. Mahdi Amin, the Prime Minister's adviser for education and primary and mass education, said the wider list is meant to give fair recognition to capable teachers at every level of the system.

Recipients will come from primary schools, general, technical and madrasah secondary institutions, colleges and universities, as well as specialised fields such as medicine, agriculture, engineering and science and technology. Each of the 100 teachers will receive Tk 1 lakh.

Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to strengthen the dignity of the teaching profession and to raise the quality of education.
