A newborn girl was rescued alive in the early hours of Monday after hospital staff at Gajaria Upazila Health Complex in Munshiganj heard her crying beside a nearby garbage dumpster.
Staff on night duty said they were alerted around 1am by the sound of an infant crying near a heap of waste beside the hospital compound. Nurses, helped by attendants of admitted patients, rushed to the spot and brought the baby inside for treatment.
Residential Medical Officer Dr Nusrat Farjana Khan said the infant appeared to have been born only shortly before she was found and was severely hungry, with visible injury marks on her head. After stabilising her, doctors referred the baby to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for specialised care.
Gajaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Umme Hafsa Nadia visited the health complex after being informed and said arrangements had been made for the newborn's transfer to Dhaka for advanced treatment. She added that authorities would investigate who left the baby and take legal action once identified.
