Bangladesh observed the International Day of Older Persons on Thursday, 1 October, under this year's theme, "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives". On the eve of the day, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir issued a message on the occasion.
In his message, the President described senior citizens as the foundation on which the country's progress has been built, and urged the government, private institutions, philanthropists and families to give priority to their welfare and dignity.
The President pointed to Article 15(d) of the Constitution, which places responsibility on the state to provide social security in old age.
He also highlighted that Tk 5,239 crore has been allocated for old-age allowances in the 2026-27 fiscal year, with increases in both the number of beneficiaries and the amount each person receives.
