Sometimes the best weekend plan in Munshiganj is the river itself. On Saturday, 24 October, members of the district's Sammilito Sanskritik Jot (Combined Cultural Alliance) set off from Munshiganj Launch Ghat at 11 in the morning for a day-long boat trip, swapping rehearsal rooms and offices for open water.
The route took the group past Sholaani in Gazaria, Char Kishoreganj Ferry Ghat, Meghna Ghat and other spots along the river. On board, representatives of cultural organisations from across the district spent the day singing, chatting and simply enjoying each other's company. The alliance's president, Mojammel Hossain Sujol, and general secretary, Shahnaz Hira, oversaw the outing, according to a report by News71.
The organisers said the aim was to strengthen communication, harmony and fellowship among cultural workers and to improve coordination for future joint programmes. Participants said that time away from their routine work had given them fresh enthusiasm, and they hoped such gatherings would continue.
The idea is easy to borrow. Late autumn, before the winter fog sets in, can be a pleasant time to be on the water around Munshiganj, with cooler breezes and wide views of char lands and riverside villages. Families, school alumni groups and office teams can hire a trawler or engine boat from an established ghat, pack home-cooked food or pitha, and plan a loop that returns well before dark.
A few simple habits make a river day safer and more enjoyable. Choose a registered boat with an experienced operator, make sure there are enough life jackets for everyone, especially children, check the weather before leaving and never overload the boat. Carry drinking water, keep phones in a waterproof pouch and bring all rubbish back to shore so the rivers stay clean for the next group.
For a district whose identity is bound up with the Padma, Meghna, Dhaleshwari and Ichamati, a day spent slowly on the water is also a way of reconnecting with home, and with the people who make its cultural life so lively.
